Golden State Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr knows stylish basketball when he sees it, and he has seen it occur while watching the Blazers play.
Kerr will get a prolonged up close view of the Blazers beginning tonight, when the two-time defending NBA champion Warriors face the Blazers in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. Tonight’s game will be played at Oracle Arena in Oakland.
The Blazers’ offense starts and goes through guards Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, and the Warriors saw a similar offense when they faced and vanquished the Houston Rockets in the conference semifinal round. The Rockets’ offense revolved around guards James Harden and Chris Paul.
“They’ve got more motion, more movement than Houston, but two very dominant guards like Houston,” Kerr told reporters. “In some ways, that series (against Houston) may have helped us prepare for this one.”
The Warriors know they must try to neutralize Lillard and McCollum. Lillard has played well against the Warriors during his career and he averaged 28.3 points game during the regular season against Golden State.
The Oakland native seems to rise to the occasion when he’s playing in his hometown.
Lillard hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 6.3 seconds left in overtime to give the Blazers a 110-109 win in Oakland in December. Lillard’s highest-scoring game in Oakland was a 39-point performance in a 111-104 loss in December 2017. Lillard’s best playoff performance in Oakland was when he scored 34 points during a 121-109 loss in Game 1 of the first round in 2017.
